Large Round Walnut Pedestal Dining Table

About This Project

This large round solid walnut table features dual uplifting patinaed base arches which give visual grace to, and symmetry with, the large 80” diameter top.

The top is made from seven boards that were cut from four planks which came from the same tree. They were arranged to provide uniform grain pattern and color across the surface of the table top.

The base arches are made of baltic birch plywood and are coated with a paint that is impregnated with bronze particles. After the paint dried, a reactant was applied to the paint which caused the bronze particles to patina. The base arches then sit on two nested circular sub-platforms.

The table sits in a dining area just off the kitchen, and is used as the day to day table. This area has lots of natural light, which illuminates the rich color and grain pattern of the top, showing off the true beauty of nature. The walnut’s color compliments the darker tone of the wood floor, and the patinaed base accents the overhead bronze light fixture.

The size of the table made for interesting construction and delivery challenges. Manipulating the top in the shop was a three person operation. Luckily I have tolerant and strong shopmates. Deliver required hiring a four person moving team.
