Opposing Arches Clarification

This is a quick explanation of how the console tables were built.

The console table’s main arch is made by bent lamination. First, a convex form is made in the shape of the arch.

The arch itself is formed by sandwiching together multiple pieces of bending ply, which is a type of plywood that easily bends in one direction. The arch is thicker in the middle and tapers to the tips. This is achieved by stacking shorter pieces of ply in the middle of the ply sandwich. The ends of these short pieces are formed into wedges on the sander. This allows for a smooth transition from one ply to the next.

Glue is rolled onto all surfaces.

The form and plies are placed in an industrial plastic bag. A vacuum pump evacuates all the air from the bag. This causes atmospheric pressure to press the plies together and to the form while the glue cures (think of home food vacuum sealing).

Veneer is glued to the faces and edges of the completed arch.

The two downward arches are cut from maple. Here’s a photo of an arch being cut to shape.
